St.Jude Primary School is a government funded school in Kateete village, located in Nkenda Parish, Karama Sub County, Kibaale district.
It has an enrollment of 1,800 pupils, aged between 5 and 17 years old. Kateete well is the only source of water for this school, the neighboring trading center, which has 430 households (about 1200 residents), and the neighboring Kafunfu village, which has 115 households (about 400 residents) directly obtaining water from Kateete well.
Kateete well stopped providing water after heavy rains in March 2021 resulted in the displacement of stones and soil that blocked the well due to soil erosion. This forced children from St. Jude Primary School to walk over 3 kilometers to obtain water from a pond in the village of Kafunfu.
Since March 2021, 69 cases of bilharzia and 79 cases of typhoid have been reported by Karama Health Center, which in our own opinion, the figures are high since some individuals may have visited private clinics.
The pond is also used by animals, such as cattle from the neighborhood. Since this pond is shared with other residents of Kafunfu, there are usually long queues that caused children to miss their classes before the recent lockdown was imposed.
