Historical
Context:
Environmental degradation,
particularly deforestation, has significantly affected rural livelihoods in
Uganda. Between 1990 and 2020, Uganda lost 63% of its forest cover (National
Forestry Authority, 2023). This has led to reduced agricultural productivity,
water shortages, and increased vulnerability to climate change.
Current
Status:
The Rural Smiles Foundation
integrates environmental conservation into its broader development agenda. By
focusing on tree planting, clean energy, and waste management, RSF is helping
communities adopt sustainable practices and mitigate climate impacts.
2025
Initiatives:
- Tree Planting Campaigns:
50,000 trees
planted in deforested areas, with a focus on agroforestry to benefit farmers.
Community-led
reforestation projects that involve schools and youth groups.
- Clean Energy Solutions:
Solar energy
systems installed in schools, health centers, and households.
Distribution
of 2,500 energy-efficient stoves to reduce firewood use and indoor air
pollution.
- Waste Management and Recycling:
Establishing
waste collection centers and promoting recycling in rural trading centers.
Training
communities on composting and organic farming techniques.
Future
Plans:
- Plant 500,000 trees by 2030 to combat deforestation and
promote biodiversity.
- Expand solar energy programs to power 10,000 additional
homes and facilities.
- Partner with local governments to establish
community-level waste recycling plants.
