About Us

Rural Smiles Foundation is a Ugandan non-governmental organisation working with rural and underserved communities to advance rights, strengthen resilience and expand opportunities for people who are often left furthest behind. Our work is built around the understanding that the challenges affecting communities are interconnected. Limited access to healthcare can be compounded by poverty, unreliable energy, digital exclusion, climate vulnerability and limited participation in decisions that affect everyday life. For this reason, we do not approach development through isolated interventions. We work across health, digital rights, economic empowerment, social inclusion, civic participation, renewable energy and climate resilience to support more comprehensive and lasting solutions.

Rural Smiles Foundation works through five interconnected programs: Health & Health Rights; Digital Rights & Internet Freedom; Economic Rights & Empowerment; Social Inclusion & Civic Space; and Renewable Energy & Climate Resilience. Together, these programs provide a framework through which we respond to the social, economic, technological, environmental and civic realities facing rural communities. Our approach is participatory, inclusive and rights-based. We believe communities should not be treated simply as beneficiaries of development projects. They should be involved in identifying priorities, shaping interventions, participating in implementation and helping assess whether change is actually taking place.

We therefore work closely with rural women, young people, persons with disabilities, refugees and displaced communities, smallholder farmers, community leaders, health workers, civil society organisations, local governments, technical partners and development institutions. Rural Smiles Foundation combines community engagement, advocacy, innovation, research, capacity strengthening, technology and practical service delivery. Where appropriate, we also use civic technology, renewable energy and other forms of innovation to address barriers that traditional approaches alone may not resolve.

Our work is grounded in a do-no-harm approach. We pay attention to dignity, safeguarding, privacy, inclusion, local context and the potential risks that interventions may create for the people we work with. We also seek to strengthen existing community and public systems rather than creating parallel structures that disappear when project funding ends. Headquartered in Kibaale District in Western Uganda, Rural Smiles Foundation holds a countrywide mandate and works through community partnerships, local institutions and wider national and regional networks. While our roots remain firmly in rural Uganda, our growing partnerships allow us to contribute to learning and collaboration across different parts of Uganda and the wider East African region. At the centre of our work is a simple principle: sustainable change is strongest when communities have the knowledge, resources, voice and partnerships needed to shape their own future.
