Rural Clean Energy Transition Initiative
Rural Clean Energy Transition Initiative
Advancing clean energy access, climate resilience, and sustainable rural livelihoods.
The Rural Clean Energy Transition Initiative is Rural Smiles Foundation’s long-term clean energy and climate resilience programme. RCETI supports rural communities, women, youth, health facilities, schools, community groups, and local public service points to access cleaner energy solutions, strengthen climate adaptation, and build more resilient livelihoods. RCETI exists because energy poverty and climate vulnerability are closely connected in rural communities. Limited access to reliable and affordable energy affects health service delivery, education, household wellbeing, women’s economic participation, youth employment, small enterprises, food security, and the ability of communities to respond to climate-related shocks. At the same time, dependence on unsafe or unsustainable energy sources increases household risks, environmental pressure, and the burden on women and girls.
Through RCETI, Rural Smiles Foundation promotes practical clean energy solutions that respond to community needs. The initiative supports solar energy for rural services, clean cooking, agroforestry, climate-smart livelihoods, youth energy skills, women’s energy entrepreneurship, community energy awareness, and local energy governance. It is designed to help communities move toward cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy systems while strengthening resilience to climate change. RCETI is implemented through community listening, needs assessment, local partnerships, technical collaboration, capacity building, and practical demonstration models. The initiative connects clean energy access with health, education, livelihoods, gender equality, environmental stewardship, and community resilience.

RCETI Focus Areas
RCETI brings together clean energy, climate adaptation, livelihoods, skills, and local governance through practical areas of work that respond to rural community priorities.
Solar for Rural Services
Supporting solar energy access for rural health facilities, schools, community service points, and local institutions that need reliable power to serve communities.
Clean Cooking
Promoting safer and cleaner cooking practices that reduce household risks, environmental pressure, indoor smoke exposure, and the burden placed on women and girls.
Agroforestry & Environmental Stewardship
Supporting tree growing, environmental restoration, soil protection, and community-based climate action that strengthens rural livelihoods and local ecosystems.
Youth Energy Skills
Building youth capacity in clean energy awareness, basic energy system care, green skills, innovation, and local opportunities in the clean energy transition.
Women’s Energy Entrepreneurship
Supporting women to participate in clean energy livelihoods, community energy awareness, savings groups, enterprise development, and local climate resilience solutions.
Community Energy Governance
Strengthening community participation, local accountability, maintenance awareness, and inclusive planning around clean energy systems and climate resilience investments.
RCETI is designed as a practical pathway for rural communities to access cleaner energy, reduce climate vulnerability, strengthen livelihoods, and participate in a more inclusive clean energy transition.
