Rural Smiles Foundation Joins the Inclusive Democracy Accelerator Program

The Rural Smiles Foundation is proud to announce its participation in the Inclusive Democracy Accelerator (IDA) Program, an initiative of People Powered, the Global Hub for Participatory Democracy. This global program brings together organizations and practitioners committed to strengthening inclusion and civic participation in governance processes.

Representing the Foundation is Ahaisibwe Geofrey Mwaka, our team Lead, who will engage in the six-month accelerator running from September 2025 to April 2026. The program includes interactive online learning sessions, personalized mentorship, and an in-person convening in Kenya, where participants will exchange strategies to advance inclusive and participatory democracy.

The IDA program provides participants with technical knowledge, tools, and a global support network to improve how governments and civil society design and implement democratic processes that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to community needs. Through this journey, Geofrey and the Rural Smiles team aim to strengthen the Foundation’s work in promoting inclusive civic participation, access to justice, and local accountability particularly for rural women, youth, and persons with disabilities in Kibaale District.

“Participating in the Inclusive Democracy Accelerator is a timely opportunity for us to deepen our understanding of inclusive governance. We are excited to learn new participatory models and practical tools that will empower marginalized groups to influence decision-making processes in their communities,” shared Geofrey.

The Rural Smiles Foundation has been at the forefront of advancing civic engagement in rural Uganda through initiatives such as community dialogues, local governance advocacy, and the Strengthening Civic Space and Resilience in Uganda Project, supported by CIVICUS. The knowledge gained from the IDA program will directly inform the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to co-create inclusive participatory mechanisms, strengthen local leadership capacities, and ensure that no voice is left behind in governance.

As Rural Smiles embarks on this global learning experience, we remain committed to amplifying rural voices and ensuring that participatory democracy truly reflects the realities and aspirations of all citizens.

Stay tuned as we share insights, lessons, and innovations from this transformative journey towards inclusive democracy and equitable development.
